This article is for those on a spiritual path who want to learn to recognize the signs of true awakening. It’s purely informative and invites reflection and awareness.

More and more people are discovering their spiritual nature, which is beautiful and empowering. But not everything that seems “light” is actually nourishing for our inner growth and awakening process. In this blog, you’ll learn to recognize different signals of false awakening (false light), avoid spiritual bypassing, and strengthen your inner guidance and embodiment to grow authentically.

It can be tricky to know whether what you’re experiencing is true, organic awakening or a false one, especially if you haven’t experienced the difference before. Thankfully, we have an incredible tool for discernment: our feeling body. Emotions are part of our internal guidance system, and they give us important messages about what is aligned for us.

Another way to spot false information is to notice whether it feels stable and grounded or airy and unstable. If a person or teaching seems scattered, overly airy, or agenda-driven, it’s often a sign something is off. People can mix truth with misinformation, sometimes unknowingly, but that doesn’t make it the truth.

Pause and notice your physical and emotional reactions when engaging with teachings or practices. If something feels heavy, anxious, or draining, it’s often a sign to step back and observe. Your higher intelligence and feeling body are always guiding you. Pay attention to subtle—or not-so-subtle—messages from within. Anything that doesn’t feel clear, grounded, or aligned is worth observing carefully.

Signals of False Awakening

Here are key patterns to watch out for, many of which are connected to spiritual bypassing—avoiding emotions or real-life challenges instead of integrating them fully.

1. Over-Promising “Instant Enlightenment”

Real spiritual growth is a journey, not a quick fix. Anyone claiming instant results hasn’t experienced the full path, and they may not be aligned with your true journey. Trust the process, not the shortcuts.

2. Over-Identifying with the Spiritual Self

When the ego becomes too attached to spiritual identity, it’s easy to lose touch with your authentic self. Awakening is about uncovering the layers of your true self, not creating a new identity to impress others or feel “more spiritual.”

3. Denying the Human Experience

False light often promotes the idea that being fully spiritual means transcending all earthly experiences. Being human is part of the spiritual journey. Embrace your humanity while you awaken—your growth is not about escaping life.

4. Disconnection from Body & Earth

Spirituality should root you in your body and in nature, not disconnect you from it. Practices that ignore the body or make you feel “above it all” are a red flag. Trust your body’s wisdom, acknowledge what arises, and release what doesn’t serve you. True spirituality is embodied, not detached.
Integration happens through the body: mindful movement, grounding practices, journaling, or simply noticing sensations in daily life can help you anchor your awakening fully.

5. The “All or Nothing” Mentality

Some spiritual teachings create black-and-white thinking: you’re either perfectly enlightened or nothing at all. This leads to shame, guilt, and burnout. Embrace the shades of gray—spiritual growth is messy, imperfect, and deeply human.

6. Bypassing Real-Life Issues

Spiritual practices should never be a way to avoid life or personal challenges. Using spirituality to bypass trauma or emotions is a common form of spiritual bypassing. True healing happens through life, not in spite of it.

7. Channeling Other Beings & Light Language

Light language is spiritual communication through sounds or symbols coming from your own higher self. It can be a beautiful form of self-expression, but avoid using or listening to light language from others. You don’t know what is being communicated or transmitted. Trust your own voice and follow your inner guidance.

8. Channeling Other Beings: Spirit Guides, Angels, and Deities

Calling on external beings for guidance is part of false light. Communicating with angels, spirits, or other entities can raise doubts and makes you vulnerable to losing your inner power and autonomy. Asking a spirit guide for advice is essentially the same as asking a stranger on the street how to live your life. Your higher self is your ultimate guide. Trust the messages you receive from within.

9. Tarot, Moon Rituals, and Other External Practices

While tools like tarot or moon rituals can feel appealing, over-reliance can create dependency, misalignment, or energetic leakage. Be aware that these practices often include subtle agreements that drain your life force. Use your intuition and higher self as your primary compass.

10. Overemphasis on Money, Teachers, and Authority Figures

Be cautious when spiritual guidance is primarily about money, becoming famous or heavily relies on external authority. Popularity says nothing about the truth. Trust your own power, intuition, and judgment – these are always more reliable than what someone else tries to teach you.

11. Magic & Sex Magic

Rituals, manipulative sexual energy, or black magic are consciousness traps. True power comes from connecting to your higher self, becoming sovereign, and using your own energy consciously. You don’t need external magic to improve your life—your thoughts, emotions, and intentions are your true tools.

12. Awakening is Multidimensional

False light often presents the idea that we are simply moving from 3D to 5D, but in reality, we are moving through all 12 dimensions this time matrix holds. Many people experience a 5D experience simply because they believe they are going to 5D. True awakening is not about escaping the 3D world. Spiritual growth is about integrating and healing all levels of existence, not bypassing the human experience.

Real Awakening vs False Awakening

Spending energy on false awakening keeps us looping in the wrong patterns, which is why it’s called deception. But being caught in these patterns can also be a rite of passage, helping you develop discernment and inner wisdom. Be compassionate with yourself. You’re learning, and no one expects you to know everything.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I truly growing by engaging in this information or practice?

  • What feelings am I avoiding?

  • What am I afraid will happen if I stop relying on these tools?

Releasing old trauma naturally reduces attachment to spiritual coping mechanisms. Then higher truths and deeper integration become accessible. True awakening goes beyond the mind and gradually allows you to remember who you really are.

Final Words

There is no absolute right or wrong—everything happens for a reason. Yet discernment is crucial: choose wisely where you put your energy and attention.

Your awakening is deeply personal. Trust yourself, honor your body, and remember: you are always your best guide and teacher.

Take your time to explore, observe, and integrate—your journey is yours, and your inner guidance is your most powerful ally.
